SITTING IN THE OFFICER'S CLUB, AT A ROUND TABLE SURROUNDED BY SIX EMPY CHAIRS. TABLE IS CLEAR, EXCEPT FOR HIS GLASS OF WHISKEY/SCOTCH AND AN ASHTRAY, CONTAINING A SINGLE CIGARETTE - JUST BURNING OUT. OTHER OFFICERS ARE IN GROUPS AROUND THE JUKEBOX AND BAR - FROZEN.

Neil: (sigh) I'll never understand why men have to wage war on each other. Why there has to be this constant conflict over land...or sea...or air. Do the leaders of our nations get off on the idea of world domination, and sending the young men to burn to nothing in the metal carcasses of their planes?

(chokes on tears) We lost two more today. Dawson (looks down) and Jones. Oh, 'Bertha. They were just kids - boys! It wasn't supposed to be their time yet. I hope neither of 'em left a girl at home, but I know they both left a mother. No parent should outlive their kid. I may not have personal experience, but I know it just ain't right.

(takes drag on cigarette) Tomorrow's another day, another mission. We'll lose another couple from the flak, and who knows if we'll lose whole planes too.

(drinks the last of what's in his glass) Who knows... Maybe we'll get lucky and not lose anybody. But either way, (stands up, pushes chair into table) this pilot will remember.

(walks off stage, lights dim)
This is a monologue. A dramatic piece meant to be performed on a stage. Please critique it as such.

--

I wrote this monologue for English 11, based on the obituary of a WWII veteran.

The setting is based on what I've seen of officer's clubs in shows such as "Twelve O'Clock High".

Also, the description mentions six empty chairs at his table. They are meant to represent his wife and 5 children.

--

The character, Neil, is based on an actual person, as is "'Bertha", his wife (Albertha). The other names mentioned, "Dawson", and "Jones" are ficticious.
